I love my job. But there are a few reasons why it can be not so fun some days.
Today my coworker and I had to revoke admissions for several students. Yes, I tell them they are no longer coming to school here. I am quite thankful for the coworker working with me on this though, since she has been in the biz for awhile and knows the ropes. She's a blessing!
My calls resulted in the following:
1 crying student
1 oblivious student who then had their irate father call me back.....4 times
1 mother that shouted at me on the phone
1 mother who started crying at the end of the phone call
I'm sure there will be a few more tomorrow when I get returned phone calls. Till then, that bottle of Oliver Soft Red is calling my name.
I'm sure this is a situation lots of admissions counselors deal with as they tell students over and over, your senior year DOES matter! How do we get them to understand this truly does happen, that students' admissions do get revoked?
Time and time again I tell students that their senior grades are just as important as every other year. Students say they've heard they need to continue to take hard classes so they can show colleges they are ready. Note to students: If you consistently received Ds in a particular, it might be time to take a lower version of the class or take something else. We're not telling you to take underwater basketweaving (THN grads sing along with me...for anyone else, it's from a hilarious musical we did about high school when I was a freshman) though. Just take classes that are challenging, but aren't impossible.
In other news, scheduling schools visits is coming along. I was told today that I64 through St. Louis is under construction, so if anyone has tips on how to avoid that and not add 30 min to my triptime, please share!
